When a New York historian is killed, a woman disappears, and a body is found in a shepherd’s hut in the hills, Day becomes increasingly involved and begins to suspect a connection with a so-far undiscovered ancient site. The death of Martin Day’s colleague, Edward Childe, appears to have been suicide, but Edward was just about to meet the granddaughter of the only woman he ever loved, Artemis. Day refuses to accept the suicide story, which only leaves murder. Archaeologist Martin Day is asked to keep an eye on a shipping magnate who is suspected of antiquity fraud on a grand scale, but whose guilt cannot be proved. There is also the small question of a valuable artefact with no provenance.
